Common Ground-Dove
Common Ground-Dove

My past stops at Poe Road on the southwestern shore of the Salton Sea have yielded worthwhile bird encounters. On this visit at the end of November 2014, I focused on birds at the edge the thick mesquite thickets several hundred yards from the current shore of the receding sea. In October 2011,  I spent the night camped near this location and photographed all three local rails here; Sora, Virginia and Clapper Rails. I’ve also met the Least Bittern here.

Depending on the season and dumb luck, one might meet any number of birds here. On this visit I found Common Ground-Dove, Black-Tailed Gnatcatcher, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, Verdin, Red-Tailed Hawk, White-Crowned Sparrow.
