2014 Early August With Eastern Sierras Mammals

Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel

Birds were not the only subjects to entertain me while visiting my friends at June Lake. The eastern shore of June Lake by Oh Ridge Campground gave me my first meeting with Pygmy Rabbits, a bold Mule Deer and unidentifiable chipmunks (unless they are in hand and an expert is analysing). At Mono Mills, while chasing woodpeckers, I was charmed by a Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel, a handsome chipmunk sized rodent with beautiful pelage.
