2015-06-11 Siskiyou Mountains

Golden-Crowned Kinglet - Regulus satrapaMy drive through the Siskiyou Mountains followed National Forest Road 20 from the Applegate Valley, past Dutchman’s Peak (with a detour to the lookout station at it’s peak) and on to Mount Ashland and finally down to the town of Ashland Oregon. This road was no walk-in-the-park, but it provided some of the most spectacular vistas I’ve ever experienced, especially those vistas from the top of Dutchman’s Peak.

I went hoping to find a Gray Jay and in this I failed, but the MacGillivray’s Warbler and the Golden-Crowned Kinglet were more than adequate consolation. I modestly captured a few other birds including a frustrating female Calliope Hummingbird, and missed on some others, but the kinglet and warbler were nice moments for me.

Other than the great vistas, the subjects I gathered on this day were Red-Breasted Nuthatch, Yellow-Rumped Warbler, MacGillivray’s Warbler, Green-Tailed Towhee, Lazuli Bunting, Brewer’s Sparrow, Calliope Hummingbird, Mountain Bluebird and Golden-Crowned Kinglet.
