Excepting Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and Madagascar, woodpeckers are found all over the world. These birds have strong bills for excavation and drumming on trees and long sticky tongues, that curl around their skulls in special cavities, for extracting food. Many cavity nesting species benefit from the work that woodpeckers perform. Images displayed in this gallery include Acorn Woodpecker, Arizona Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Gila Woodpecker, Gilded Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Lewis’s Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Three-Toed Woodpecker, White-Headed Woodpecker, Williamson’s Sapsucker, and Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker.
