The bill and head shape of Ross’s Geese are outstanding features to look for if they are not near enough to a Snow Goose for size comparison. Ross’s Geese lack the dark edges to their bills that give the larger Snow Goose the appearance of a crooked smile. Some call this feature a “grinning patch” or “black lips.” Science calls this the tomia. Unlike Snow Geese, these birds have no subspecies or variants.
