Little Pocket Mouse
Perognathus longimembris
The little Pocket Mouse has been much studied. NASA sent them on space missions in 1973. One of the sub-species, the Pacific Pocket Mouse (Perognathus longimembris pacificus) is precariously close to extinction. Valiant efforts are underway by the San Diego Zoo to captive breed this animal and reintroduce it to the wild population.
