Texan Cardinals

Cardinalis cardinalis

A familiar bird in the eastern US, the Northern Cardinal is also found in southern Arizona. I thought Arizona was rich with Cardinals, but when I visited Texas I realised this was a place of Cardinal riches. This bird is so beloved that seven states have adopted it as their state bird.

These North American natives are non-migratory and may be found nearly everywhere in the eastern USA between the Atlantic coast and the plains east of the Rocky Mountains and south into Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. The deserts of the American Southwest and Northwestern Mexico also host these brilliant red birds.

At Laguna Atascosa NWR I was entertained by a feisty male that could not stop himself from jousting at any reflection of himself he found. Rear-view mirrors and shiny truck bumpers were all fair game. If interested in seeing the birds I met in Arizona, visit the <Species Gallery>.
